re: Torrid models NOT plus size?

Comment from customer on Torrid facebook page:

So I was on your website looking at your clothes and realized that NONE of your models look plus size! They have flat stomachs, thin arms, and small thighs. Ok, maybe their arms aren't as thin as a VS model, but they're thinner than most plus size women. They have on short shorts, no back fat, etc. I know we're all built differently being plus size, but c'mon! I'm looking at these women like why the hell are they on a plus size website?! I don't know many plus size women who can wear short shorts, at least comfortably. Just sayin'......

When all is said and done, the reason the Torrid models do not "look" plus size is because they are TALL.

I think what customers are meaning to say, when they make comments about the models NOT looking/being plus size is..."We want models that are our height".

According to a quick google search (because everything you read on the internet is TRUE) the average height for women in the U.S. is 5'3". So in conclusion what the Torrid customer are asking for is shorter Torrid models. This is never going to happen, because to be a model in the plus size industry you have you be at least 5'8".

I will leave you with pictures of Torrid models from 2007. These were pulled from my purchase history under my account.

  1. I am 5'6" and weigh 155. I am a size 10 or 12 depending on the clothing. This is plus-sized by industry standards, average by all others. I walked into a Torrid store about a year ago and there were two beautiful Amazonian women standing at the counter. They looked me up and down, looked at each other and one approached me and said with a less than genuine giggle "Umm, excuse me, sweetie? Hi. This is so awkward because you're so tiny but do you know how our sizing works here? We sell plus-sized clothing and a 00 HERE is actually a 12." I was so shocked that all I could manage to say was, "That's my size, I think I'll be fine." Last night on Pinterest I pinned a beautiful dress from Torrid and realized the model was probably about my size. While I am aware that my body is very curvy, it is not plus-sized, not that there is a problem being plus-sized. I measure 36-29-39 which I believe is fairly proportionate seeing as I am curvy. The top half or me needs petite clothing and I usually average about a 2/4 in my tops. The bottom half of me isn't much larger but its 10/12 and borders plus-sized, or in Torrid's case IS plus-sized. The fashion and clothing industry is so off-course it's unreal. There are billions of people in this world, therefore billions of body types, and they can't be divided into only 2 categories.
